Davis Chatfield and Patrick Welch are both off to great starts at the Korn Ferry Tour’s Magnit Championship in New Jersey.
The two locals are both five-under for the tournament and in a tie for 11th overall through the first round.
Chatfield made five birdies and no bogeys en route to his 67.
Welch’s card was a little more of an adventure as he made and eagle, five birdies and two bogeys en route to his 67.
This is a critical week for both of them, but on the Korn Ferry Tour in general, as it is the last week of the regular season.
The top 156 players on the points list advance to the playoffs.
Welch and Chatfield will both advance to the next tournament no matter what happens this week.
However, positioning will be critical as the weeks go on.
Chatfield is 40th on the points list, just ten spots away from being in position to get a PGA Tour Card (top 30).
Welch is 101st on the points list and needs to put together a good week to give himself some cushion going forward in an effort to lock up Korn Ferry Tour status for next season.
