GolfNewsRI’s Women’s Players to Watch in 2023
Rhode Island may be the smallest state, but it is full of great golf talent, with more on the way.
Whether it’s talent that is still playing locally or talent that has taken the next step in their careers, Rhode Island has a lot to be excited about in 203.
With the Players to Watch, GolfNewsRI aims to highlight two men’s and two women’s players that could be/will be making moves during the 2023 season.
And not necessarily the star players.
So without further ado, here are GolfNewsRI’s Women’s Players to Watch in 2023:
Alexis Florio
After graduating Columbia and transferring to Indiana, Alexis Florio had a record-breaking fall season for the Hoosiers.
At the Evie Odom Invitational, she fired a 64, which was the lowest round in school history, and also resulted in the lowest 54-hole score in school history.
What will she do in the Spring season?
Florio and Indiana are staring down the Big 10 Championship and an NCAA berth.
Vinny Papa
The youngest of the Papa sisters will have a great chance to make some noise in this upcoming golf season.
Over the summer, Vinny qualified for and played in the Notah Begay III Jr. National Championship where she finished inside the top 20 in her age group.
That experience came after a season of working on her entire game, including her putting stroke.
If Papa can duplicate that experience of being on a national stage with tv cameras everywhere to competing here locally, and elsewhere, she will have a big summer.
Honorable Mentions
Kylie Eaton – Kylie is in her last semester high school golf. This summer, she will defend her Women’s Amateur title on her home course, Kirkbrae.
Gianna Papa – Gianna hasn’t played much golf recently as he was injured for a good portion of last summer. If she is at full health, she will be a force in the upcoming season.
Olivia Williams – Olivia won the girls high school championship as a freshman and then blew out Kylie Eaton in the Girls Jr. Amateur later that summer. Heading into this season, she will have a chance to help La Salle continue their dominance and also establish her own dominance.
