Iaciofano Wins RI Stroke Play Championship in Playoff
Joey Iaciofano out dueled Mike Hamilton in a two hole playoff to win the Rhode Island Stroke Play Championship on Tuesday afternoon at Alpine.
Iaciofano and Hamilton both finished at nine-under par in regulation, before Iaciofano birdied the second playoff hole to claim the trophy.
“It means so much. My dad is pretty right now. I mean just to win it, especially even with Paul Quigley’s name being on the trophy, I already texted him and he is really happy. Having someone so close to me and winning basically his tournament, it’s pretty special,” said Iaciofano after the round.
The Rhode Island Golf Association announced that the Stroke Play Trophy would be named after Quigley back in March.
For Iaciofano, this is his second State win in about three weeks, having won the Rhode Island Junior Am at the end of July.
“What has clicked is my confidence has kind of rolled back to me a little bit, especially after the Juniors, that got my confidence going. I played well in Nashville the following week and then coming back here, my confidence was so high and so I felt pretty good coming into this week,” Iaciofano said.
Iaciofano carded an opening round 72, before finishing with rounds of 69 and a final round 66.
He will now look to take this confidence back down to Florida with him where he is set to begin his senior year at Oxbridge Academy.
“This gets my confidence going really well, knowing that I can shoot these numbers. I think my lowest three-day score was five-under. To shoot nine-under with even a lot left out there was really amazing to see,” said Iaciofano.
Iaciofano noted that his goal of the High School season is to capture the individual State Championship, where he has finished second and fourth over the last two years.
