The URI golf team used an incredible final round rally to finish in a tie for third at the UConn Invitational at GreatHorse.
The Rams were 11-under in the final round to finish at eight-over for the tournament.
“Today showed what we are capable of but also showed the painful lesson that we are not going to win unless we’re focused for three rounds,” said Head Coach Gregg Burke after the round.
URI played the first round at 19-over par as a team and the second round at even par to put themselves in a hole heading into Tuesday’s final round.
“All you need to know about how good we are and how poorly we played in the first round is the fact that in one round today, we beat the tournament champions by 16 shots,” added Burke.
UConn won the tournament at even par overall.
Boston College finished second while URI tied for third with St. John’s.
Leading Rhody
The Rams were led this week by Tony Liu and Luke Stennett, who finished in a tie for seventh overall at one-under par.
“It’s easy to say that we got great tournaments out of Tony and Luke. Luke had the best final two rounds of anyone in the field and Tony had the second best final two rounds in the field,” said Burke.
Tyler Bruneau finished in 15th overall after a three-under final round moved him 17 spots up the leaderboard.
Aidan O’Donovan finished 38th.
Bryant & PC
While the Rams were rallying, the Bryant Bulldogs and Providence Friars were battling it out in the middle of the pack.
Bryant ended up getting the edge with a team score of 36-over par to finished in ninth place.
The Bulldogs were led by Dylan Gallagher, who finished at six-over par for the week and in a tie for 30th overall.
Gallagher’s two-under final round jumped him 17 spots up the leaderboard.
The Friars finished at 38-over par and in solo tenth for the tournament.
PC was led by freshman Callan Fahey, who finished in a tie for 23rd at five-over par.
