Former University of Rhode Island star Chris Francoeur will take the solo lead into Sunday’s final round of the Brazil Open on PGA Tour Americas.
Francoeur is 17-under for the tournament and leads Will Gibson by one shot with 18 holes to go.
“i’ve never been in this position before,” Francoeur said after the round. “I’m probably going to be really nervous. Just accepting that and dealing with it. It’s a position that everyone in this field wants to be in.”
The former Rhody Ram posted back-to-back rounds of 65 and then a third round 66 to take the lead.
He will seek his first victory on PGA Tour Americas on Sunday.
“Feel like I’m in a really good space mentally on the golf course right now. Really just focusing one shot at a time. I know it’s cliche, but that’s really what i’m trying to do. You can’t do anything about the shot you just hit or the shot you have two holes from now. Just trying to stay in the present,” said Francoeur.
Francoeur’s 3rd Round
Starting the day in a tie for second, Francoeur opened with a birdie on the par-5 first hole, but gave it right back with a bogey on the second.
He would recover with another birdie on the third hole and another on the fourth to get to two under for the round.
Following a string of three pars, Francoeur dropped a birdie putt on the ninth to turn at three-under par 32.
On the back side, Francoeur birdied the tenth hole to move to four-under for the day.
He would remain tied for the lead throughout the back nine before a birdie on the par-5 18th hole gave him the solo lead.
