Coventry’s Sam Fuentes Qualifies for U.S. Junior Amateur

Coventry High School golf star Sam Fuentes was among four players that qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur on Tuesday afternoon at The Club at River Oaks in Connecticut.
Fuentes finished the day at even par and then survived a five for three playoff to get into the tournament.

Among the other players to get through is University of Rhode Island verbal commit Luke Stennett.
Stennet was five-over on the par threes, including two double bogeys.
However, he made an eagle and five birdies to get into the playoff and survive from there.
The 2023 U.S. Junior Amateur will be held at Daniel Island Club in South Carolina from July 24-29.
Other Rhode Islanders in the field who did not make the cut include Sebastian Carlsson, Cole Vieira, Nick Emery and Andrew Chadwick.
Fuentes’ Round
After opening with three straight pars, Fuentes bogeyed the fourth hole, but bounced back with a birdie on the sixth hole to stay at even par.
He would turn at that even par.
On the back side, Fuentes birdied the tenth hole, but made back-to-back bogeys on the 11th and 12th holes to go to one-over par.
Fuentes birdied 14, but gave it right back with a bogey on the 15th.
Going into the final holes at one-over, Fuentes made a clutch birdie on the 18th hole to finish at even par.
Stennett’s Round
Stennett got off to a great start, making birdie on each of the first two holes to get to two-under.
He then bogeyed the third and doubled the par-3 fourth hole.
Stennett would turn at one-over.
On the back side, Stennett doubled the par-3 tenth, but bounced back with a birdie on 12 and an eagle on the 13th.
He gave one back with a bogey on 14, but closed birdie, bogey, birdie to get to even par and into a playoff.
