RIIL to Combine Girls, Boys & Team State Championships

Three championships, two days.
The Rhode Island interscholastic League (RIIL) is combining the girls high school state championship with the boys and team high school state championships, GolfNewsRI has learned and confirmed.
“Yes, they will run at the same time and on the same course. Go Bengals,” said Jennifer Wasson, the St. Mary-Bay View Athletic Director and golf director for the RIIL.
All three championships will be held on May 30-31 at Cranston Country Club.

La Salle sophomore Olivia Williams will enter the tournament as the defending champion.
The change is reflected on the high school golf schedule, currently posted on the RIIL website.
Previous Championships
Previous incarnations of the Girls State Championship have seen the tournament held a week or two before the boys/team state championships.
Last year, Williams won the Girls state championship at Warwick Country Club on May 24, about a week before her La Salle Rams won the team state championship and Max Jackson won the boys individual title.
The same can be said for St. Mary – Bay View’s Brooke Brennan, who won the 2021 Girls State Championship on May 25 at Warwick Country Club, about a week before Bishop Hendricken captured the team championship at Cranston Country Club.
Both of those championships, and ones that came before, were one-day events.
This change gives the girls the chance to battle it out over two days, like the boys and teams, to decide the state champion.
The girls, boys and teams now have everything to play for at Cranston Country Club.
