Andrade “Grateful” for Senior Open’s Return to Newport in 2024
For the first time since 2006, a USGA event will be coming to Rhode Island, specifically Newport.
As GolfNewsRI reported, the U.S. Senior Open will be coming to Newport Country Club in June of 2024.
“While I am sad that the USGA and Newport Country Club couldn’t have come to an agreement to play the Senior Open this year, I am grateful that it is returning in 2024,” RI golf legend Billy Andrade told GolfNewsRI on Tuesday.
The Senior Open is set for Omaha Country Club in Nebraska in 2021.
These tournaments are usually scheduled well in advance.
It is unknown if there were any conversations between Newport and the USGA to bring the tournament here in 2021.
The tournament was originally supposed to come to Newport in 2020, but was canceled due to the coronavirus.
Now Rhode Islanders have 2024 to look forward too.
“Excited for our great fans of Rhode Island to experience a major championship on an iconic venue,” Andrade added.
Potential Field
Players who could potentially be playing in the tournament include locals Andrade, Brett Quigley and Brad Faxon.
Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker, Bernhard Langer and other legends of the game could be making their way to Newport as well.
