In his resolution, Amore urges the state to “take those steps necessary to assist local governments to acquire lands so that they may be used and preserved for future use as open, recreational and green space.”

He adds that Rhode Island should, “take all steps necessary to prepare and budget the state’s share… for the acquisition of the Metacomet Golf Course by the City of East Providence.”

As GolfNewsRI reported, the historic Metacomet Golf Course was officially sold to Marshall back in October of 2020, but the property has been at a stand still since than as the legal/political process is playing out.

The group Keep Metacomet Green (KMG) has been strongly advocating for the club to be saved, in some capacity, and for development to not happen.

KMG has released the following statement:

Representative Gregg Amore (D-District 65 East Providence) has announced his intention to submit a resolution on January 28 regarding the former Metacomet golf club property, located on Veterans Memorial Parkway in East Providence. Rep. Amore cites a number of factors leading to his submission, including the responsibility of state and local governments to provide land for public recreation and the conservation of natural resources to promote public health; the vital need to preserve existing open space in urban areas, especially in a small state such as Rhode Island; and the urgency of improving the urban climate situation by combatting the “urban heat-island effect” that results from replacing green space with asphalt and concrete.

In his resolution, Rep. Amore urges the state to “take those steps necessary to assist local governments to acquire lands so that they may be used and preserved for future use as open, recreational and green space.” Specifically regarding Metacomet, Rep. Amore alludes to the “once in a lifetime opportunity” for the City of East Providence to preserve the iconic property through the City Council’s movement toward taking the property via eminent domain. Through this resolution, Rep. Amore requests that the state of Rhode Island “take all steps necessary to prepare and budget the state’s share… for the acquisition of the Metacomet Golf Course by the City of East Providence.”

Rep. Amore’s resolution encompasses nearly every argument that Keep Metacomet Green! (KMG) has been setting forth since July 2020 in its grassroots effort to preserve the open and green space of Metacomet. As such, KMG totally supports Rep. Amore’s resolution and calls upon the legislators representing East Providence residents in both houses of the General Assembly to not only support the resolution, but to advocate for its passage with their State House colleagues and the leaders of the House and Senate.

We are grateful for Rep. Amore’s leadership on this issue at the state level. We also thank Sen. Valarie Lawson (District 14 East Providence), who is expected to submit a companion resolution in the Senate, and all East Providence elected officials at the state and local level who have committed to keeping Metacomet green.”

  • Madness. Madness and stupidity. In a free society, a government should not be allowed to abuse the powers of eminent domain so easily. This sets a dangerous precedent.
