LPGA Tour pro Jing Yan was assessed a two stroke penalty on the first tee of the U.S. Women’s Open on Thursday after she arrived late to her tee time.
Yan, a pro since 2015, had a 9:42 tee time on Thursday morning at the Cypress Creek course in Houston, Texas, but showed up several minutes late.
She teed off by herself, before eventually catching up with her group, who was already in the middle of the fairway.
Rule 5.3a says ““The player must start at (and not before) his or her starting time. If players fails to do so, they can be disqualified, although if they arrive within five minutes, the general penalty of two strokes is applied.”
Yan ended up shooting a three-over par 74. The leader is a four-under.
Yan tees off at 8:22 a.m. on Friday for round two.
All tee times were moved up due to weather.
