BREAKING: Welch Wins Individual Title at East Lake Cup
Sparked by an incredible back-9 run, Providence native and Oklahoma golf star Patrick Welch has won the individual title at East Lake Golf Club on Monday afternoon.
Welch fired a five-under par 67 to take home the title, edging teammate Quade Cummins.
“I thought I played really well today. I started hot with those three birdies, and then hit a little rough patch later on. I knew that I would need a few more birdies if I wanted to have a chance, and fortunately I found them down the stretch,” said Welch after the round.
The win comes a couple of months after Welch lost his father unexpectedly while he was on his way back from the U.S. Amateur.
It is his first win in college.
Welch’s Incredible Back-9
After making the turn at 1-under par, Welch went on an incredible run on the famous back-9 at East Lake to take the lead.
Welch started with a birdie on 11 to get to two under par.
After he saved par on 12, Welch stuck it close on the 13th hole for what amounted to be a tap in birdie to get to three-under par.
The Providence native then dropped a short birdie putt on the par-5 14th hole to get to four-under par.
A couple of holes behind, teammate Quade Cummins, who held the lead at 5-under, most of the day, bogeyed the 16th hole to drop one shot back.
Welch then birdied the famous par 5 18th hole to get to five-under par for the tournament and take the clubhouse lead.
On the 18th, Welch smashed his tee shot down the middle and then put his second shot to just in front of the green.
Welch then chipped to about three or four feet and sank the putt.
