A Farewell to Metacomet
Well, today is the day.
A day that we knew was coming, but hoped that it wouldn’t.
Metacomet Golf Club closes today.
The sign has already been taken down, the locker rooms and clubhouse are basically empty.
“I went to Metacomet today to clear out the locker I’ve had for 24 years. The first thing I notices was that the sign was missing when I turned into the driveway, this brought tears to my eyes. The parking lot was full. As I walked into the now empty lobby and up the familiar stairs to the women’s locker room my sadness was replaced by anger,” wrote Marilyn Walsh in a Facebook post on the Keep Metacomet Green Facebook post.
Today, members, soon to be former members, will play the course for the very last time. According to sources, members are required to leave the premises by 7:30 p.m.
Long time caddie Dave Bart will loop at Metacomet for the last time. Then, like many other employees, will have to figure out what is next, as caddying was his only job.
A GoFundMe Page has been set up for Bart in an effort to help him out.
Some, like former greenskeeper Joe Medeiros, have already said their farewell to the legendary Donald Ross course.
“Monday, almost 40 years later, I was given the opportunity to walk around Metacomet for maybe the last time and I stood at that exact spot where I shut my mower off decades ago…. got the same feeling,” Mederios wrote in a touching column on GolfNewsRI on Tuesday.
These stories are just three of hundreds of stories from members, workers and others that have all done or are doing the same thing today.
Whether you liked Metacomet or not, played well there or not, today is a dark day in Rhode Island golf history.
