Gianna Papa Fires Course-Record 67 to Clinch #1 Seed in RI Women’s Amateur
Valley Country Club’s Gianna Papa fired a course-record 67 (6-under) on Monday morning at Montaup Country Club to clinch the number one overall seed in the RI Women’s Amateur.
Just a few weeks ago, Papa cruised to the Girls Junior Amateur Championship at Alpine Country Club. It was her second straight Junior Amateur title.
Overall, the top 16 players mad the cut, with match play beginning on Tuesday.
After opening with three straight pars, Papa birdied the fourth hole and then eagled the fifth hole to get to three under on the round.
She saved par at six and seven before birding eight to bring her to four under overall.
Papa would make the turn at that number.
Papa’s only blemish on the card came when she bogeyed the 11th hole with a five.
However, she quickly made up for it with birdies at 13,15 and 16 to get to six-under par for the round.
Papa ran away with the number one seed, the next closes competitor was at even par, and next closest after that was three over.
