URI Finishes 10th at Moraine Intercollegiate

The University of Rhode Island golf team finished in tenth place at the Moraine Intercollegiate this week in Ohio.

The Rams finished the tournament at 24-over par, one shot behind ninth place Miami (OH) and three shots behind eighth place Xavier.

“Jack (Quinn) had a terrific tournament for us, having never seen the golf course before. I thought Seb (Carlsson) going four over in the final 36 holes was pretty darn good,” Head Coach Gregg Burke told GolfNewsRI.

Quinn lead the Rams with a solo fourth place finish at two-under for the tournament, while Carlsson climbed 14 spots in the final round to finished in a tie for 63.

Tony Liu finished in a tie for 24, Josiah Tong finished T48 and Owen Rooney finished T70 to round out the scoring for URI.

“Tony dominated this course last year, but didn’t have the same stuff this year. I keep seeing things in Owen that make me believe he’s gonna brea out and I’m looking forward to that. I thought Josiah played tight. No one cares more about this team than Josiah. He is a very different player here than he was at Great Horse, but I know he will be back right away,” added Burke.

The tournament was won by VCU at seven-over par, two shots better than Minnesota.

After a busy stretch of golf, the Rams will name take a “little time off” before closing out the fall season in Mexico later this month.

“The team get away to Martha’s Vineyard certainly crowded the scheduled a little bit, but it was worth it 100 times over. Having a team and coaches on the same page enjoying each other so much goes a long way toward how you train and how you compete so we did it. But it comes at the cost of five straight weekends of competitive golf,” said Burke.

URI will practice at Shelter Harbor and Misquamicut next week before heading to Mexico for the Monterey Collegiate Classic October 26-27.
