URI Wins UConn Invitational

The University of Rhode Island golf team rolled to a victory at the rain-shortened UConn Invitational this week at Greathorse.

The Rams fired a team score of two-over par to beat Boston College by 11 shots and claim the title.

“I told the guys before we teed off that we were other people’s Super Bowl. They’ve waited for this moment to beat us. But there were eight people who believed in us and they were all at this table. We came to play the golf course, not any other team,” Head Coach Gregg Burke told GolfNewsRI after the round.

Rhode Island was six-over in the first round and held a one shot lead over Bryant, Providence and Fairfield.

The second round of the tournament was washed out, making Tuesday’s 18 holes the final round.

The Rams fired a team score of four-under to pull away from the field.

“I am proud of our team and our program. In the last 54 holes at Greathorse, we beat the host school by 52 shots on its home course. I keep hearing other schools have better facilities, better schedules, better athletic programs and better coaches. Seems the only thing we have is better results,” said Burke.

The Rams will have next week off and take a team trip to Martha’s Vineyard to play Farm Neck Golf Club, Vineyard Golf Club and Edgartown, before returning to action.
