Leopold Surges up Leaderboard in 2nd Round of Northeast Amateur
Five-time Rhode Island Amateur champ Bobby Leopold fired a second round 66 (3-under) to surge up the leaderboard at the Northeast Amateur on Thursday.
“I played nice, hit a good shot on one. Greens were a little fast so three-putted one, three-putted two for bogey, bogey and I said ‘ah this is going to be a tough day,’ but then birdied three, four, five, which was awesome and the back nine, I knew I could take advantage of if I played well. Made some putts on the back nine and a birdie on 18 was a ice way to finish,” Leopold told GolfNewsRI after the round.
The 66 moved Leopold 29 spots up the leaderboard and into a tie for 41st overall, just inside the cut line.

The cut will be to the top 60 players and ties following Friday’s third round.
“Just do the same as today. My goal is to always try and shoot a couple under par every round. Didn’t do that round one, but did it today and try and do that again tomorrow and Saturday and that will put me in a good spot for when it finishes up,” said Leopold.
Leopold opened the tournament with a 72 in the wind on Wednesday, but found the better end of the draw on Thursday.
“It was a little windy yesterday when we played. This morning we came out and there was not much wind. This place plays hard when it gets windy, you start second guessing yourself. I hit it pretty much the same as yesterday, just rolled in some putts today. I kept it in front of me and did the hard things well,” said Leopold.
Tee times for Friday’s round have not yet been released.
Calef Rallies
Reigning Rhode Island Amateur champ Mike Calef put on a rally of his own on Thursday.
He carded a two-under 67 and move up 19 spots on the leaderboard.
Calef currently sits in a tie for 72nd.
