URI Ready for A-10 Championship

The University of Rhode Island golf team is eyeing an A-10 title this week at the conference championship down in Florida.

The championship kicks off on April 27-29 at Evermore Resort Golf Club.

“We are clearly one of the top four teams again, competing against three which practice on Bermuda grass every day. We need to play better than those schools by a significant margin to score like they will,” said Head Coach Gregg Burke.

VCU, Richmond, George Mason and URI all enter the championship ranked inside the top 140 in the country.

The tournament tees off at 7:30 a.m.

The Rams are coming off their best finish of the spring season, third place at the Rutherford Intercollegiate at Penn State.

In that tournament, URI got off to a slow start, but rallied in the final round to finish third.

“The final round at Penn State University was what we need to do for three rounds at the A10s. It gets repetitive, but it always comes down to late in the round, late in the tournament, and late in the season. Last week Josiah and Tony really stepped up with all that,” said Burke.

Heading into A-10s, the Rams will stick with the same lineup of senior captain Aidan O’Donovan, Tyler Bruneau, Josiah Tong, Tony Liu and Luke Stennett.

O’Donovan will be making his fourth appearance in the A-10 Championship.

“This is the last go-round for Aidan. This is a legacy tournament for him. I’ve tried to impress upon him that he needs to think like he’s in a Somerville (Mass.) street fight. He has a legitimate chance to win this. At the end of the day, it will come to how tough we are as individuals and as a team,” said Burke.

Tong will be making his third appearance at the A-10 Championship, while Liu will make his A-10 Championship debut.

They are both coming off their best rounds of the spring season.

Bruneau tied for 22nd at the 2025 A-10 Championship, and Stennett tied for 28th.
