URI Closes Regular Season with 3rd Place Finish at Rutherford
The University of Rhode Island golf team wrapped up their 2026 regular season with a third place finish at the Rutherford Intercollegiate at Penn State.
Helped by a final round rally where the squad posted a 6-under 278, Rhode Island finished at three-over par for the tournament, one shot out of second.
“I am not a big fan of dramatic comebacks because they are necessarily preceded by bad play, but to shoot six-under and beat Penn State by five and UConn by 15 (in the final round), especially since we had to tee off when the temperature was in the thirties, was impressive,” said Head Coach Gregg Burke.

Penn State won the event at nine-under par and George Mason finished seance at two-over.
URI finished ahead of St. Thomas, Connecticut, Delaware, Towson and St. John’s, just to name a few.
Leading Rhody
The Rams were led by sophomore Tyler Bruneau, who finished in a tie for third place at two-under par for the week.
Bruneau rolled in five birdies and was three-under over the final eight holes of the tournament.
Junior Josiah Tong carded a three-under final round to finish in a tie for tenth for the tournament at one-over for the week.
“Tyler continued to show he is our best golfer right now. And once again, we used Josiah’s and Aidan’s score all three rounds, with a special nod to JT’s three-red final round,” added Burke.
Aidan O’Donovan finished in 28th at four-over, Tony Liu finished in 34th at six-over and Luke Stennett finished in 38th at seven-over.
Next Up
URI will now start prepping for the A-10 Championship at Grand Cypress Links in Orlando.
“We’ll bring the same five to A-10s this week with the hope that today’s showing and a solid A-10 gets us in the National Golf Invitational of we don’t win the conference championship,” Burke said.
The tournament begins on Monday, April 27.
