URI Looks to Finish Regular Season Strong at Rutherford Intercollegiate

The University of Rhode Island golf team will close the regular season this weekend at The Rutherford Intercollegiate, hosted by Penn State.

After winning four times in the fall, URI hasn’t done better than a sixth place finish in the spring season.

“This is a very important tournament for us. We’ve had the medalist two of the last three years, but we’ve never really played well there as a team. Secondly, we’ve had a very disappointing Spring thus far. So much so we had everyone on the team qualify for spots this week,” said Head Coach Gregg Burke.

Out of that qualifier, URI’s lineup will be defending individual champion Luke Stennett, Tyler Bruneau, Tony Liu, team captain Aidan O’Donovan and Josiah Tong.

The tournament starts with two rounds on Saturday and then a singe round on Sunday.

Other programs in the tournament include UConn, Penn State, Loyola, Delaware, Towson, St. John’s, George Mason, Bucknell, Binghamton and Yale.

A-10 Championships Ahead

Following the Rutherford, the Rams will set their sits on the A-10 Championships at Grand Cypress Links in Florida.

Rhody was picked to finish third in the A-10 Championships, according to a poll of league coaches.

“We have a quick turnaround to the A-10 championship. We need to be playing our very best if we hope to contend,” added Burke.

The A-10 Championship takes place from April 27-29.
