Chatfield Cards Even-Par 70 in PGA Tour Debut

Former Rhode Island Amateur champ Davis Chatfield carded an even par 70 in his PGA Tour debut on Thursday at the Sony Open in Hawaii. 

Chatfield made two birdies against two bogeys in the round and sits in a tie for 80th entering Friday’s second round. 

He tees off at 1:27 p.m. eastern time on Friday in hopes of making the cut. 

As of Thursday night, the cut is one-under par, with obviously, a ways to go.

Chatfield’s First Round Breakdown 

Beginning his rookie year on the tenth tee, Chatfield opened the day with a par on ten after putting his opening tee shot in the right rough. 

The former Notre Dame star made his first PGA Tour birdie on the par-3 11th hole. 

He put his tee shot about 20 feet to the right of the flag and knocked in the putt to get to one-under. 

After saving par on the next two holes, Chatfield dropped a shot on the par-4 14th hole.

Chatfield bombed a tee shot 272 yards down the middle of the fairway, but put his second shot in the right green side bunker from 164 yards out. 

Out of the sand, Chatfield knocked it to 21 feet and ran the par putt by to make bogey. 

Following a par on 15, Chatfield stuck his second shot on 16 to eight feet, but just missed the birdie putt to stay at even par. 

Then came the par-3 17th where Chatfield put his tee shot just off the back of the green, leaving himself 63 feet from the pin. 

He rolled it up to seven feet, but missed the par putt for his second bogey of the day. 

The 17th hole was playing the as the sixth hardest hole on the course on Thursday. 

Chatfield turned at one-over 36. 

Turning to the front side, Chatfield made a string of pars to stay at one over for the day. 

The putter also got hot as he rolled in a ten footer for par on one, a six footer for par on four and then a seven footer for birdie on the par-4 sixth hole. 

That got him back to even par for the day. 

Chatfield saved par on the seventh and eight holes, but couldn’t take advantage of the par-5 ninth. 

He was just in front of the green in two and chipped up to ten feet, but missed the birdie putt to finish at even par. 

Looking at the Data 

Obviously, it is one round and a very small sample size, but here are a few numbers. 

Chatfield hit 85% of fairways (12/14) in the round with an average driving distance of 290 yards, which ranks him 102nd in the field. 

He hit 66% of greens in regulation and averaged just under two puts per green in regulation. 

On the day, Chatfield made 75 feet of putts.
