RI Golf Legend Norm Lutz Passes Away

Rhode Island golf legend Norm Lutz passed away at the age of 94, GolfNewsRI has confirmed.

Lutz won the 1970 Rhode Island Amateur Championship 2&1 over Frank McBride at Pawtucket Country Club, the place Lutz called home.

He made the Championship match three other times, losing to Cam Quinn in 1966, McBride in ’69 and Kevin Clary in 1978.

Lutz also won the 1975 Rhode Island Open and then the Rhode Island Senior Amateur in 1990 and ’92.

To go along with all of his individual honors, Lutz was a member of numerous Rhode Island and New England Four-Ball winning teams.

Norm Lutz, a cherished figure in Rhode Island golf and a true embodiment of the amateur spirit, passed away after a life devoted to the game he loved and the people who loved him.

For over 50 years, Norm was a fixture at Pawtucket Country Club, where he claimed 19 club championships and became a pillar of the local golf community. His first state title came in 1956, and in 2004, he proudly competed in his 50th Rhode Island State Amateur.

Norm brought flair, joy, and authenticity to golf—much like the legendary Walter Hagen, whose spirit he mirrored. He played with heart, lived with purpose, and always had a good story to share at the end of the day.

He leaves behind his wife Donna, his son Norm Jr and his wife Joyce, his daughter Norma Jean and her husband Craig, and his grandchildren Nick, Zach, Courtney and Nikki and their families. Norm will be deeply loved and missed by his family, friends, and the entire golf community. His legacy lives on in every fairway walked with joy and every round played with passion.
