Wannamoisett Strikes Back in Round 3 of Northeast Amateur

Wannamoisett fought back on day three of the Northeast Amateur on Friday.

The day after Oklahoma State’s Preston Stout fired a course record tying 61, there was not one player even or under-par for the third round

“It was really tough. It was like a completely different golf course today. It got pretty firm and fast at the end, really all day I guess. Just playing in that wind, we play in wind like that a lot in Oklahoma and it’s brutal, really a long day,” said Stout after the round.

Crazy wind conditions were the story of the third round.

According to the Rhode Island Golf Association, this is the first time in the history of the Northeast Amateur that has happened.

For the tournament, just three players are under par heading into Saturday.

“It was very windy from when we started to when we finished, it just never really let down. It was so brutal,” added John Daly II following the round.

Three-time U.S. Mid-Am champ Stewart Hagestad is playing in his seventh Northeast Amateur, and when asked if he had ever seen conditions like this at Wannamoisett, he simply answered “no.”

A perfect example of the challenges that Friday presented came on the14th hole at Wannamoisett.

Over the first two rounds, there were 71 birdies made on the hole.

In the third round, there were just two birdies made on the hole, the last one coming from 16-year-old Miles Russell.

“Just the difference in the way the golf course was playing was pretty difficult,” said Russell.

Conditions are expected to be a little bit more benign for Saturday’s final round.

The final group gets things started at 12:12 p.m.

Stout Leads Tournament

Despite the crazy winds, Stout still leads the tournament by one shot over John Daly II.

Stout is five-under for the tournament, while Daly II is four-under.

“I’m one stroke ahead of everyone else. I have a one shot cushion I guess that helps. I think I’m just going to act like it is a normal round of golf. Business as usual,” said Stout.

Stout and Daly II will be in the final pairing on Saturday.
