URI Takes 5th in Rain-Shortened World Golf Village Collegiate

The URI golf team started their spring season with a fifth place finish at the rain-shortened World Golf Village Collegiate this week down in Florida.

The final round of the tournament was canceled on Tuesday.

Rhode Island finished with a team score of 29-over par for the two day event, tying with Purdue Fort Wayne for fifth.

The Rams were 26-over after the first round, but bounced back with a three-over second round to climb the leaderboard.

“It is pretty obvious there was some rust, but after spending a large part of the day in last place, we came from 16 shots behind the second place team to tie it up. We slipped back a bit, but it was an impressive move,” said Head Coach Gregg Burke.

North Florida won the tournament at one-over par.

Leading URI

The Rams were led by freshman Luke Stennett, who finished in a tie for fourth place at one-over par.

He carded rounds of 74 and 71.

“Luke continues his stronghold as our top player. His ball striking was impressive,” said Burke.

Aidan O’Donovan finished in a tie for 11th with rounds of 76 and 72 for the week, while Tyler Bruneau finished 35th overall with rounds of 82 and 72.

“Aidan showed his growth as a player all day long. Tyler had a terrible start but ended up being 1 over for the final 28 holes. He will learn how to correct himself out there and will also learn to lose his memory on bad shots while playing,” added Burke.

Josiah Tong took 62nd and Tony liu finished in 98th.
