Emily Brooks captured her second RI women’s Amateur Championship title on Friday morning at Wannamoisett Country Club. 

Brooks beat Morgan MacLeod on the 18th hole to win the title. 

“It’s kind of surreal right now. I didn’t sleep well at all last night. I like to say this is fun, and it is fun in the heat of the moment, but I was nervous. I probably woke up at 1, 2, 3 4, 5 am and finally I was like, I just gotta get up,” said Brooks after the round. 

She continued, “but to stick to my game plan, and I didn’t stick to it the first six holes I was getting ahead of myself, but I dialed it back and to get to the end and stay positive, believe I could do it is just really cool.” 

Brooks also won the 2021 Women’s Amateur title, beating Addy Douglas in an epic match.

Next up, Brooks will compete in the Wanumetonomy Club Championship this weekend and then gear up for a move to Nashville as her boyfriend took a job out there.

For MacLeod, this marks her second runner-up finishin the the Women’s Amateur.

“She was amazing. Foot on the gas from the very first hole and I kind of got caught up in it. One hole, I think five, she hit a great drive and it ends up in a divot, put it in the bunker, hit it out and then almost chipped in for par and I three-putted. Her attitude all day was awesome, she is a great player and I think she will have one of these trophies pretty soon,” noted Brooks. 

MacLeod will get ready to head back to college later this month for her junior year at Merrimack.

The Match 

After halving the first hole, MacLeod won the second and third holes to take a two-up lead. 

MacLeod won the second hole after Brooks four-putted and the third hole was won after MacLeod drained a long putt. 

The next three holes were halved before Brooks won her first hole of the day on seven to cut MacLeod’s lead to one. 

MacLeod would turn with a one-up lead. 

That lead would quickly go to two up when MacLeod nearly chipped in for birdie from just off the green and had a tap in par. 

Brooks would run her birdie putt way by and miss the come backer for par.  

This was the first time all week that Brooks trailed in a match at the turn and even after the turn. 

“You start on the front nine and you get down two, so I’m down two, but I should have only been down one because I should have won the second hole, I played that really bad. But I was down two and I kind of stopped and I have some notes in my book that tells me just to recenter in those moments so I stopped and was like ‘it’s okay, there is a lot of golf left,” said Brooks. 

“But I would be lying if I said I wasn’t a little concerned.”

However, Brooks would respond by winning the 11th hole to get her deficit back to just one. 

The next four holes were halved.  

Brooks would tie the match on the 16th hole after MacLeod’s second shot went into the right rough. 

On 17, Brooks stuck her second shot right next to the flag, but MacLeod drained a 15 footer that sent the Wannamoisett crowd into a roar. 

Brooks had a short putt to tie the hole and rolled it in.

“The putt on 17 was really big because after Morgan made that putt, my putt was looking a lot longer than two or three feet. Part of my game plan was just stay in the moment and execute,” added Brooks. 

The match came down to 18 where MacLeod’s second shot went in the right bunker. 

Brooks was on the green for birdie and cuddled it up close for a tap in par to take the title.  

Net Championship 

The women’s net championship was won by Jill Lancaster. 

She defeated Melodie Hebert 5&4.
