U.S. Senior Open at Newport: A Caddy’s Guide
The views at Newport are simply incredible. Where do I even start, Newport Country Club is one of the most historic golf courses in the world and when you are on property you are truly in awe of all of history.
Hearing stories that the members tell me walking down the 10th fairway which is playing as the 1st hole for the tournament, I am learning more about the club than I could ever imagine.
Course Guide
When you are out on property the 10th hole is one that eases you into the round and should not be a problem for the Seniors, as that green has never been changed, which, which is what I have heard from some members that have been there for over 15-20 years.
When you are on the tournament front nine, you have a couple strong viewing spots. Above 13 green in the grandstands where you can also watch action on the 12th green – one of the most diabolical greens on the entire property.
When I am out reading greens for members, the 12th, 18th, 9th, and 6th greens cause a lot of issues because they are so severe.
The 13th green will be fun to watch because the seniors are playing 40 yards behind where the members normally do, and when the wind gets blowing that shot is going to be incredibly fun to watch.
Another spot where people should watch is on the tournament back nine is around the 3rd green and 4th tee box as you are able to see the ocean.
The 4th hole can play 20-25 yards longer dependent on the wind direction.
Every time I am out there, the wind tends to swirl more on the front nine, the championship back nine. Finishing on the ninth hole and seeing the merchandise tent and all the hospitality is a cool viewing area.
The 9th hole is going to be a determining factor down the stretch because it is more uphill than you think and the green is severely sloped.
Most of the members I caddy for struggle on this hole.
The members at Newport Country Club are truly incredible and seeing the golf course evolve these last couple of weeks, and getting to caddy in a group with Billy Andrade, I was able to learn how the pros are going to play the course.
When I was on the course that day Bernhard Langer’s caddy was out there scouting because Bernhard has never seen the golf course. It just goes to show the magnitude of this golf tournament this year and how much it means to the players.
Seeing the rough and the green speeds this tournament is set to be a great viewing experience for everyone involved and will be a bright light for the state of Rhode Island.
