Prout’s Rocco Capalbo Wins Boys State Title

Prout freshman Rocco Capalbo won the Boys State Title on Wednesday afternoon at Cranston Country Club.

Capalbo carded a two-round score of 142 to win the tournament by two shots over North Kingstown’s Will Owens and La Salle’s Drew MacLeod.

“This means a lot. I want to thank my parents, Dave (Adamonis) my coach, all of my teammates, Drew (MacLeod) and Will (Owens), they made me battle, it was a tough finish for sure,” said Capalbo after the round.

Capalbo is the first male golfer at Prout to win a State Title, five female golfers have won Titles previously.

Final Round Battle

Capalbo started the day tied for the lead with fellow star freshman Drew MacLeod of La Salle.

The Prout star played the front nine at one over, while MacLeod played the front at three-over.

However, there was another challenger coming – North Kingstown’s Will Owens.

Owens drained a big birdie putt on the ninth hole to pull into a tie for the lead with Capalbo.

MacLeod then birdied 12 and 13 to pull within one of the lead as Capalbo also birdied 13.

MacLeod would par out.

One group ahead, Owens bogeyed the 18th hole, just missing a par putt, to give Capalbo a two shot lead.

Capalbo would close with a par on 18 to take the title.

This will surely be just the first of many battles to come between Capalbo and MacLeod.

“It was amazing. Drew is one of my best friends, he is such a good player. He made a birdie on the par-3, big putt, I was so proud of him. I know we have a lot more to come and I can’t wait,” said Capalbo.

They will now turn their attention to Challenge Cup and State events for the summer.
