2024 High School Golf Preview – South Division

The South Division saw two teams get into the State Tournament last season, and Narraganset’s Sebastian Carlsson win the boys Individual State Title.

This year, North Kingstown comes into the year as the division favorite, while Prout has a new head coach in Dave Adamonis.

Let’s head south.

South Division

North Kingstown

The Skippers finished fourth in the State Championship tournament last season with a team score of 624 through two rounds.

This year they return star players Will Owens, Brayden Dickinson and Sam Iden, all of whom finished in the top 30 in scoring average in 2023.

“North Kingstown is very good this year. Their top three might be the next best after La Salle,” said Prout Head Coach Dave Adamonis.

“We have a nice team on paper. The returning seniors is pretty exciting stuff,” said NK Head Coach Mark Comolli.

Owens finished 19th, Dickinson 21 and Iden 30 in scoring average last season.

“We are trying to win a State Championship. I mean we have three good seniors coming in, we have a good freshman (now sophomore) who developed over the summer and hopefully he can help us win,” said Owens on the GolfNewsRI Podcast over the summer.

Will Owens

That sophomore is Pierce Potter.

As a freshman, Potter finished 136th in scoring average with an average score of 47.7.

“You hate to put a lot of pressure on him, but yea, he is going to be important,” said NK Comolli.

The Skippers will also look for contributions of Jacob Hall and Ben Recupero.

Prout

The Crusaders made it to the State Championship last year, finishing sixth overall.

This year, Challenge Cup’s Dave Adamonis take over as the Head Coach.

“Brendon Ray did a great job with them. He just got married and has a lot of responsibility at Point Judith. So when he left this winter I was interested and thought it would be a good group of kids to coach. So I let the school know I was interested and here we are three weeks in and enjoying every minute of it,” said Adamonis.

Adamonis tells GolfNewsRI that he is running an eight round Q-School, which has led to freshman Rocco Capalbo being Prout’s number one guy.

“We are gonna see some real good things from him, he will be a contender for the individual State Championship. His presences is already starting to rub off on kids,” Adamonis adds.

Sophomore Alec Morrone will take the second spot to start the season for Prout.

As a freshman, he had a stroke average of 46.7, good for 122nd in the state.

“Alec has improved immensely over the winter. He is friends with Rocco, and they have been working on golf specific fitness and Alec has played extremely well in the first three weeks,” said Adamonis.

Junior Harris Krupp is the captain of the team after being in the lineup consistently last season.

He ranked 61st in the state in stroke average at 42.6.

Other players to watch for are Matt Speltz, Charlie Horne, Lucas Leroux, Ava Andosica and Caleb Burnett.

Last week, Prout played a scrimmage match against La Salle (minus Olivia Williams) at Winnapaug and lost by one shot.

Best of the Rest

Narragansett – The Mariners just missed out on the State Championship Tournament last season, finishing 15th in scoring average.

They did get an individual State Title in the form of Sebastian Carlsson, now a freshman on the URI squad.

The season, Narragansett will be led by senior Jacob Biafore.

Biafore is coming off a junior year where he ranked 100th in scoring average in the state.

Senior Nicholas Davenport will also play a key role on the team after finishing 109th in scoring average last season.

Juniors Jack Giannetto and Cyrus Hotchkiss will also look to take the next step.

The other teams in the division are Westerly, South Kingstown, Chariho and Exeter West Greenwich
