URI Captures Share of Team Title at Carpetbagger Classic
The University of Rhode Island golf team captured a share of the team title at the Carpetbagger Classic this weekend in Maryland.
Rhody finished at 15-over par for the tournament to tie with Mount St. Mary.
“Today we lost 15 shots to Mount St. Mary’s in the first six or seven holes and were eight back. Over the next five or six we got it to two, and we knew we had to dig in for the final seven holes. In that span, Bryson was 5-under, Tony was even and Josiah 2-over so we got some great play from them. But in the end we just failed to finish it off,” said head coach Gregg Burke following the tournament.

The Rams started the final round with a six-shot lead, but the team carded a final round 298, compared to Mount Saint Mary’s final round 287.
“We had said earlier that we lack the toughness that has been our hallmark, but we have time to correct that,” said Burke.
Rhode Island was led by Bryson Richards and Tony Liu, who finished in a tie for third place at one-over par for the tournament.
“For the two tournaments this week, Bryson was 6-under and Tony was 5-under. Bryson finished third in both and Tony finished fourth in the first and third in the second so we are very strong at the top. Josiah has proven to be a solid three for us and Geronimo showed just how good he can be as well,” added Burke.
Josiah Tong finished in a tie for 22nd at eight-over, while Geronimo Narizzano finished in a tie for 28th.
Rhode Island is off until the Cutter Creek Classic, which will be held from March 29-31 in Snow Hill, N.C.
Bryant Finishes 5th
In the same tournament, the Bryant Bulldogs finished in fifth place with a team score of 28-over par.
The Bulldogs were led by Tyler Dupuis who carded a seven-over par tournament and finished in a tie for 18th overall.
Cael Kohan and Patrick Galleher finished in a tie for 22nd in the tournament.
Bryant returns to action on April 13 when they play in Roar-EE Invitational.
