The University of Rhode Island Golf Team has released its schedule for the Spring season. 

The Rams will play six tournaments this spring starting next month and concluding  with the A-10 Championship at the end of April. 

“This is a big schedule for us. Playing six in the spring will be a challenge, but we have the players who can handle it academically and athletically,” said Head Coach Gregg Burke. 

The Rams will be lead by five-time winner, and fifth year senior, Bryson Richards, who posted back-to-back individual victories during the fall season. 

The team will also look for contributions form senior Geronimo Narizzano and sophomore Aidan O’Donovan. 

Freshmen Tony Liu, Josiah Tong, Owen Rooney and Sebastian Carlsson will also play key roles in the team’s success. 

Schedule Breakdown 

URI opens the season at the Surf Club Invitational on March 11-12, hosted by Appalachian State. 

Last spring, Rhode Island had two of the top six individual finishers, while the team finished ninth out of 18. 

“We have not played particularly well at the opener, but this group seems to be working harder than ever this time of year. We love the Surf Club, and we love the way the tournament is run. The field is always terrific,” said Burke. 

Rhody will then look to capture their third straight team title at the Carpetbagger Classic in Maryland from March 16-17 at Worthington Manor Golf Club. 

“We are back-to-back winners at the Carpetbagger, so we go there with targets on our back,” Burke said. “Having two freshmen in the top three makes us inexperienced but dangerous.”

After that, URI goes tot he Cutter Creek Intercollegiate in North Carolina to end the month from March 29-31. 

To start April, URI will compete in the Dragon Match Play Invitational, hosted by Drexel at Green Valley Country Club in Pennsylvania. 

“Playing in a match play event at the Dragon is something we’ve been working on for the past couple years,” Burke said. “It will really spark the guys’ imagination and will make us really focused for the final two. You can’t hide or count on a teammate to bail you out in match play.  We’ll see who is ready for the stretch run for sure.”

URI will close out the regular season with the Penn State Rutherford Intercollegiate from April 13-14, where Bryson Richards is the defending individual champion. 

Rhode Island will then go to the A-10 Championship at Grand Cypress Links from April 26-28. 

Burke adds, “Hopefully the freshmen will have the experience we need to contend, and we get some other help for Bryson, who should be in contention the entire time.”
