Leopold, Lukowicz Lead RI Amateur After Round 1 of Stroke Play

Bobby Leopold and Jamie Lukowicz put on a show Monday at the Rhode Island Amateur at Montaup Country Club. 

Leopold and Lukowicz both carded first round 65s (6-under) to lead the stroke play portion of the event by three shots after the opening round. 

Brad Valois and Kevin Silva sit at three-under. 

The top 32 players after Tuesday’s second round make the cut to match play.

Lukowicz’s Round

After starting with two pars on the first two holes, Lukowicz bogeyed the third hole, but bounced back with birdies on two of the next three to get under par. 

He turned at two-under 34.

On the back side, Lukowicz birdie the tenth and 11th holes, before dropping a shot on 13. 

The 2020 Amateur champ then bogeys the 13th hole, which he called “an awful mistake.” 

He follows up with birdies on the 15th, 16th and 18th to close the round strong. 

Leopold’s Round

The three-time RI Amateur champ got off to a hot start on Monday, with birdies on the fourth and fifth holes. 

He took one step back with a bogey on the sixth hole, but quickly rebounded with three straight birdies on seven, eight and nine to turn at four-under. 

On the back side, Leopold put together a string of pars, then closed with birdies on 16 and 18.
