URI Finishes 9th at Bash at the Beach

Despite top seven finishes by Brandon Gillis and Bryson Richards, the University of Rhode Island Golf team finished ninth in the Bash at the Beach tournament in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
The Rams carded a team score of 19-over part finish five shots behind eighth place Dayton and just a few shots ahead of Presbyterian.
“There were many good things over the three rounds but the overwhelming fact is that we are a two-man team right now. We had two players in the top six individuals and still came in 9th. Bryson and Brandon combined for nine under. If we got just even par from two of the other three each day we are tied for the championship,” said head coach Gregg Burke after the tournament.

Richards finished the tournament at five-under and in a tie for fourth place overall.
Richards carded a first round 66 and followed up with back-to-back 71s.
Meanwhile, Gillis finished at four-under and in a tie for sixth place overall.
Gillis opened the tournament with a 76, then followed up with a 68 and 65.
In the final round, Gillis had a 16 foot putt for 63 on the 18th hole, but missed it, and the wind took it 12 feet past.
Gillis missed the comebacker and carded a 65.
However, the rest of the team struggled in the tournament.
Geronimo Narizzano finished in a tie for 63rd, Andrew DiPetrillo finished in a tie for 82nd and Chuck Tragesser finished in a tie for 85th.
“We have a couple days to get some good work in before we play again and I’m sure we’ll get more from the 3-4-5 slots. I will say that our not playing well was not because of lack of effort all winter. The guys worked hard and just need to put it together,” Burke added.
The Rams will play at the Carpetbagger Classic in Urbana, Md. The 36-hole tournament will be held at the Worthington Manor Golf Club from March 18-19.
