Reaction to GolfNewsRI’s Handicap Survey

Earlier this week GolfNewsRI published the results to our handicap survey that we have conducted over the last several months.

The survey consisted of 22 questions and had 230 participants.

GolfNewsRI’s survey showed that 90% of participants have a handicap, and 93% of those participants use the GHIN app from the USGA.

“I believe everyone should have a handicap. It is how we measure our game against the course and each other. It also lets us see if our game is improving,” said Peter Walsh, former PGA Teaching Professional and Operations manager at Kings Crossing.

As the survey shows, most participants are within the handicap range of 10-20, with about 25% in the single digits.

“Of the over 200 responses to the survey and others reading the survey we all recognize golf can be a tough sport to play at times case in point only 20% of golfers worldwide will break 90 ever and 2% will break 80,” said Drew Anderson, who was named RI’s Best Golf Teacher in 2021 by Golf Digest.

Other questions in the survey asked about putts, giving putts, practice time and more.

“It was great to see the results from your initial survey, but i think one question did get missed……”Do you play the ball down when you play?” the answer to which will affect the accuracy of your handicap. learning how to play out of bad lies is a major key in your growth as a golfers ability,” added Walsh.

Advice from Anderson

Those looking to improve their respective handicaps for the upcoming golf season would benefit from these 4 keys.

  • Better manage your expectations shot to shot
  • Avoid Doubles / Triples
  • Create a golf journal and plan out a weekly structured practice plan for the entire golf season.
  • Seek out a qualified golf coach that will support your goals and aspirations to lowering your handicap.
