Westerly Town Council Denies Winnapaug CC Zoning Ordinance

The Westerly Town Council voted against a zoning ordinance that would allow Winnapaug Country Club to develop the land around the golf course.
In a meeting that lasted only a half hour on Monday evening, the motion was not passed on a unanimous decision.
Town council member Brian McGuinn offered a motion to amend the ordinance and reduce the amount of cottages to 30.

However, this motion was denied by a 3-1 vote.
During the meeting, it was mentioned that the two sides are far from agreeing on any decision.
It is GolfNewsRI’s understanding that this process could start over again with the new town council starting in January.
Winnapaug Renovations
As GolfNewsRI reported, Winnapaug is scheduled to be revamped by golf legend Jack Nicklaus.
Along with the course revamp, Nicklaus design was expected to build a new hotel, banquet hall, and one-two bedroom suites for the “ultimate golf experience.”
And that is where the controversy came in.
The renovations were scheduled to start in October, but there has been pushback from Westerly residents on the building portion of the renovation.
