Clarification on Wednesday’s Meeting Regarding Triggs Bid

GolfNewsRI has received clarification regarding the meeting being held on Wednesday morning to discuss the bid to operate and manage Triggs.

The meeting will be held at 9 a.m. at the Roger Williams Park Botanical Center in Providence.

“The meeting is open to the public, but is not a hearing. There will be no public testimony or comments taken,” Parks Superintendent Wendy Nilsson told GolfNewsRI in a phone call Monday morning.

Last week, a press release was sent out from the Rhode Island Golf Association (RIGA) mentioning that there would be a public hearing.

“That press release didn’t come from us,” Nilsson said.

As GolfNewsRI reported, FCG Associates will be awarded the Triggs bid following recommendation from the Board.

Nilsson will approve their bid and FCG’s new 10-year lease will begin on January 1, 2023.

The Botanical Center is located on Floral Ave in Providence.

  • So basically the people who know nothing about golf get to decide based on who know what. I can guarantee you there will be dragging of feet for the reinvestment that the other boss has laid out.
I guess MR Metacomet killer get to have his way again.

  • So starting January 2023, the current owner will retain ownership. According to the RFP, money is to be used to make improvements to the course, including the clubhouse, the pro shop and the course itself. It also includes making golf available to youngsters, allowing Providence public schools to use the course as their home course. I’d be curious to find out what the last RFP required and if the City of Providence has monitored and of what was to be done? I’d be more curious to find out why the RIGA bid was not even considered or put out for public opinions. It offered more money to the city for the overall lease. This is more money for the city at a time when money is hard to come by in today’s economy. It also provided more money for improvements for the course and buildings. I guess it’s business as usual in good old Providence. I guess the city only cares as long as it gets it’s yearly lease money, then “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. “ I thought the days of the good old boys was done? Who is going to monitor the progress of the required improvements to the course and its buildings? Who will monitor to make sure golf is available to more of the inner city youth than are supposedly being included by the current regime? Who will monitor the course getting more of the city’s public high schools to use Triggs as its home course? Why not listen to public opinion? I’m sure there would be a lot to be said for a time for change. So much for depending on the will of the people. Oh wait that would be Democracy in the City of Providence.
