Rhode Island Finishes 3rd in Tri-State Matches
Rhode Island will once again have to wait until next year for another shot at the Tri-State Matches.
Massachusetts won the matches in dominant fashion on Wednesday at The Aquidneck Club, putting up 81 points over the two day match.
Connecticut finished with 62 1/2 points, while Rhode Island managed just 48 1/2 points for the tournament.
The Rhode Island team lost Massachusetts by more than 30 points.
RI hasn’t won the Tri-State Matches in 20 years.
This is Massachusetts’ third straight Tri-State title and their 17th in the last 18 years.
Four-Ball Breakdown
Rhode Island got off to a good start on the final day with the team of Bobby Leopold and Tyler Cooke taking six points in the opening match.
Six points is the maximum a team can take in a match.
Kevin Blaser and Kevin Silva locked up four points, but other than that, no other RI pairing had more than two.
Meanwhile, Massachusetts, who had a huge lead entering the day, had one team take five and a half points, two teams take five points and another take four and a half.
Connecticut actually won the four-ball section 28 -26-18 (RI).
