URI Finishes 3rd, Gillis Sets Tournament Record at UConn Invitational

University of Rhode Island Golf star Brandon Gillis set a tournament record at eight under par to win medalist honors at the UConn Invitational on Tuesday at GreatHorse. 

Gillis fired rounds of 71, 68 and 69 to set the record and take home the individual title. 

“Brandon was terrific the entire tournament. He was in control of every aspect of his game and his emotions,” said head coach Gregg Burke after the round.

Meanwhile, the URI Rams finished third in the tournament with a team score of 27-over par. 

Fellow Rhode Island school Bryant University finished in 13th at 85 over par.

Gillis’ Final Round 

Starting the day with the lead, Gillis opened the final round of the tournament with a birdie on the first hole. 

After a string of four pars, Gillis dropped birdie putts on the sixth and seventh holes, before closing the front nine with a birdie on the par three ninth. 

 On the back side, Gillis bogeyed the tenth hole but bounced back with a birdie on the 11th hole. 

Following another string of pars, and the tournament well in hand, Gillis closed with a bogey on 18 to shoot 69. 

Leading Bryant 

The Bulldogs were led by Jack Woods, who finished in a tie for 48th at 19-over par. 

Gustavo Belardo finished 60th and Tyler Dupuis finished 66th. 

Next Up for URI 

The fall season is over for Rhode Island. They will return to action in the spring.

Bryant returns to action on October 21 and 22 at the Lehigh Invitational
