Triggs Asks Members to “Consider Voting” for Smiley Over Cuervo
With the Providence Mayoral election fast approaching, Triggs Memorial Golf Course is asking its men’s and ladies inner club members to consider voting for candidate Brett Smiley over Gonzalo Cuervo.
“If you are a resident of the City of Providence we urge you to consider voting for candidate Brett Smiley in the upcoming Democratic primary on September 13, 2022. Candidate Smiley has a plan to build more affordable housing in Providence while preserving Triggs Memorial Golf Course,” says the email.

Back in December, Cuervo talked about his plan to sell Triggs in favor of more housing for the City of Providence.
“Cuervo has stated publicly multiple times that if elected mayor he would bulldoze Triggs to develop housing,” reads the email that was sent out Wednesday morning.

However, in a recent interview with GolfNewsRI, Cuervo says that is no longer the case.
“That is an idea I floated awhile ago, but I’m not sure that is doable with that land. So, no, it is not going to happen,” Cuervo told GolfNewsRI.
He added, “It was just an idea that was floated almost a year ago. All of my plans are on my website and that is not part of my plans,” Cuervo said.
Triggs is one of the 4-5 most famous courses in Rhode Island and has received national attention on a yearly basis.
Triggs most recently hosted the Rhode Island Mid-Amateur this week, which was won by Larry Lafauci.
According to multiple sources, the course is up for bid in December with multiple parties expected to bid on management rights.
