Welch, Francoeur Miss Western Am Match Play Cut

It was a long day of golf at the Western Amateur, and at the end of it, Patrick Welch and Chris Francoeur missed the match play cut.

In Welch’s case, he played himself into a 7-for-2 playoff at six-under par, before losing out.

Francoeur missed the cut into the second 18 holes on Thursday.

The former URI star finished at four-under for the tournament

Welch Makes Run

To start Thursday, Welch was well outside any cut line.

However, that all changed after the Oklahoma star fired a 6-under 65 in the first 18.

Welch started the round with three pars, before birding the fourth and sixth holes to turn at two-under par.

Making the turn, Welch dropped birdies at 10, 11, and 12, and then two more birdies at 15 and 17.

He closed with a bogey on 18 to shoot 65.

On the second 18 of the day, Welch opened with a bogey on the first hole, but bounced back with birdies on six and eight to turn at one-under.

Welch parred holes 10-13, but a double on 14 put him behind the cut line.

The former Classical star rallied to birdie the 15th and 17 holes to get to six-under for the tournament and get into a playoff.
