URI’s Richards Finishes 2nd, Nelson Wins New England Amateur

University of Rhode Island golf star Bryson Richards finished in a tie for second this week at the New England Amateur at Alpine Country Club.

Sparked by a final round 68, Richards finished seven-under for the tournament and just one shot back of winner Jared Nelson.

“I got off to a cold start, that bogey on two really hurt, but I was hitting it well, gave myself looks all day and had a hot back nine for awhile, then three-putted 18, which was my first bogey on the back nine all week, but all in all I hit it well,” Richards told GolfNewsRI after the round.

Richards finished tied with Holy Cross star Christian Emmerich and Joseph Harney.

He now look ahead to another season at the University of Rhode Island.

“This tournament is always a good one to wrap up the summer with, obviously a lot of talent here. A lot of good players, it is just important to stay ready, stay competition ready when you go back to school. We start up here in three weeks or so, but I’m excited to get back,” added Richards.

Nelson, a fellow Vermont native like Richards, used rounds of 69, 69 and 70 to win the tournament by one shot.

Nelson held a two shot lead going into the 17th hole, but bogeyed it.

However, an easy two-putt par on 18 sealed the victory for him.
