Brad Valois Goes Low, Leads RI Amateur After Round 1

Fast greens and tough wind conditions were no problem for four-time RI Amateur champion Brad Valois on Monday at Wanumetonomy in the opening round of the 2022 RI Amateur.

Valois fired a six-under 64 and leads the tournament by four shots heading into Tuesday’s final round of stroke play.

“Greens are mint. Short, short course, but tricky. All about angles to give yourself the best looks. I did great at that today and hope it can continue. Focusing on that and patience. Quality birdie putt opportunities are more important than anything,” Valois told GolfNewsRI after the round.

Valois was one of just six players under par on the day, and no other player was more than two-under.

“The course was playing really tough. The greens are super fast and firm, and it’s windy,” former Moses Brown star Harry Dessel told GolfNewsRI.

He is currently tied for second and two-under par along with Billy Forcier.

Cut Day

Following the end of Tuesday’s round, there will be a cut to the top 32 players and ties.

Those players will advance to Wednesday’s match play tournament.

If the cut were to take place today, which it doesn’t, the number would be three-over.
