Construction Begins on Topgolf in Cranston

After a few years of talks and waiting for something to happen, construction has finally begun on the Topgolf entertainment center in Cranston.

Topgolf will be located on Sockanosset Cross Road in between Chapel View and the former Covid-19 testing site.

According to a report WJAR-TV, there will be an official ground breaking for the facility on July 13.

The facility could be open by next year.

Topgolf has not released any information on the project to this point.

Mulligans Island vs Topgolf

The new Topgolf facility is going to be located right down the street from the current golf facility in Cranston, Mulligan’s Island.

Back in 2020, Mulligan’s owner Michael Friedman tried to sell Mulligan’s Island and have the property developed, in part due to Top Golf coming in.

“Last year (2019), the City Council approved a zone change to a 4.8-acre parcel on an already congested Sakonnosset Crossroad to allow for commercial recreation uses including a 3-story, 67,000 square foot Topgolf with a large parking facility. This multi-tiered driving range will have 176-foot high poles which can be seen from miles away. The lights throughout the facility will be intense and the noise and traffic will likely burden the residents of the neighborhood in perpetuity. The impact to our already challenged business will likely be cataclysmic when Topgolf opens,” Friedman wrote in a letter to Cranston City Council urging them to approve the deal.

The deal ended up being rejected and Mulligan’s Island remains open for business.

It will be interesting to see what happens now that Topgolf’s arrival is imminent.

Will Mulligan’s stay in and try to compete, will another effort be made to sell.
