Welch Leads Locals at Northeast Am, Menante Running Away With Tournament

With two rounds down and two to go, it is Patrick Welch who is leading the local seven thus far at the Northeast Amateur at Wannamoisett Country Club.

Welch posted a two-under 67 in round two and is now one-under for the tournament. That’s good enough for a tie for 12th.

“I made one bogey today, I played pretty clean golf all the way through. I was in some trouble at times, but I got out of it pretty well. I made a 30-footer for par on nine, so that helped keep the round going. Overall, it was a good day, I putted pretty well, even though I only made three birdies. I just kept burning lips,” Welch said after the round.

Welch tees off at 1:14 p.m. on Friday afternoon.

The Oklahoma star is well inside the cut line.

“I don’t want to jinx anything, but I’m not even thinking about the cut. I just have to take it one day at a time, one shot at a time. I’m going to do the best I can to score around here,” added Welch.

The top 60 players and ties make the cut.

Welch’s Round

Starting on the first hole Thursday, Welch opened with four pars, before getting a birdie putt to drop on the fifth hole.

He gave it right back with a bogey, but then birdied seven.

A 30-foot par putt on nine saved him and he turned at 33.

On the back side, Welch parred the first seven holes and birdied the par-5 17 to get to two under on the day.

The former Classical star would have another birdie look on 18, but just missed it.

He two-putted for par to shoot 67.

Menante Running Away

Defending Northeast Amateur Champ Dylan Menante is pulverizing the rest of the field.

Menante is 12-under through two rounds and holds a six shot lead over the next closest competitor.

The 12-under through two is a Northeast Amateur record.

He does not have a bogey on the card yet.
