RI’s McCormick, URI’s Richards Advance in U.S. Open Qualifying

Former Rhode Island Amateur Champion Tom McCormick and University of Rhode Island Golf star Bryson Richards are among the five players that advanced to U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying on Tuesday at Kirkbrae Country Club.

McCormick posted a three-under 69 to take co-medalist honors, while Richards finished at one-under to make the cut by two shots.

Tom McCormick tees off on the 10th hole.

The other three players to qualify at Kirkbrae were Connecticut’s Fletcher Babcock, Florida’s James Hervol and Massachusetts’ Matt Baran.

Hervol is originally from Massachusetts, but turned pro and now lives in Florida.

Sectional qualifying takes place on June 6 in various locations.

June 6 is known as the longest day in golf.

Samuel Grindle and Patrick Frodigh will be the alternates.

They advanced in a 3 for 2 playoff over former Ledgemont pro Troy Pare.
