The 10 Most Intriguing Matches on the 2022 High School Golf Schedule

This upcoming Rhode Island high school golf season presents some very intriguing matches and perhaps even state championship previews.

GolfNewsRI has taken the liberty to go through the entire schedule and break out the 10 most intriguing matches to watch – at least on paper.

Team and division previews will be coming out over the next several weeks.

Before you continue reading, a few things should be noted.

This list is based solely on the Rhode Interscholastic League schedule that was released, meaning that Challenge Cup events, and Invitational Tournaments (ie. Hendricken Invitational) are not included.

Also, Rhode Island stars Rocco Biafore and Sebastian Carlson play for St. George’s. St. George’s is not part of the RIIL.

10 Most Intriguing Matches

(Locations are not listed for every match)

Moses Brown vs La Salle vs Scituate

Kylie Eaton

 – Perhaps the most intriguing matchup on opening day, phenom Max Jackson and teammate Joseph Earley, as well as, freshman Olivia Williams, lead the Rams into a battle with Moses Brown stars Harry Dessel and Kylie Eaton.

– Both teams finished top five in last year’s state championship.

Bishop Hendricken vs East Greenwich vs West Warwick

 – The defending champs, Hendricken, make their season debut against rival East Greenwich and West Warwick. The Hawks and Avengers finished 1-2 in last year’s state championship tournament after battling right down to the final putts.

 – EG head coach Marc Brocato was named High School Golf Coach of the Year this offseason.

Woonsocket vs Ponaganset

Gianna Papa

 – Gianna Papa makes her high school golf debut.

St. Raphael Academy vs St. Mary Academy Bay View

  – Led by Nick Emery, St. Rays’ upstart golf program will make their season debut against what should be a game St. Mary/Bay View.

La Salle vs Shea vs Wheeler

While Shea is on the rise, La Salle and Wheeler did battle in last year’s state championship tournament, with the Rams finishing third and Wheeler finishing sixth.

East Providence vs Barrington vs St. Raphael

 – East Providence senior Michael Wetmore will look to lead the Townies into a tough match against Barrington, who finished inside the top five in last year’s state championship, and upstart St. Raphael.

La Salle vs Moses Brown vs Achievement First Academy

Max Jackson

– By this time, LSA and Moses Brown will have already met in a match once this season (see above) and given the star power, the return match will certainly be meaningful.

– This will also serve as a good measuring stick match for Achievement First Academy.

Lincoln vs Cumberland vs Woonsocket

 – All three of these nearby rivals are looking for a return to glory, specifically Cumberland and Woonsocket, but the Lions as well.

– While no course is listed at the moment, there is a good chance this match will take place at either Kirkbrae or Lincoln Country Club, two courses that all three teams are familiar with. No home course advantage here.

Bishop Hendricken vs East Greenwich vs Cranston West at Cranston CC

Ryan Marcantonio

– A late season matchup between Hendricken and East Greenwich, with Cranston West in the mix as well. Who knows what this match could mean for the standings.

– The match will be hosted by Cranston Country Club, home of the Rhode Island golf state championship tournament.

North Kingstown vs South Kingstown vs Coventry

 – We love rivalries just like anyone else and NK and SK is certainly a rivalry that can’t be missed, even on the golf course. All three of these programs expect to be on the rise this season.
