Matsuyama Eagles 1st Playoff Hole to Win Sony Open

Defending Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama made an eagle on the first playoff hole to edge Russell Henley and win the Sony Open on Sunday afternoon in Hawaii.

“Russell was playing so beautifully the front nine, but at the turn I was thinking, He can’t keep this up, can he? I was able to birdie 10, and then a two-shot swing at 11, and then the game was on again,” said Matsuyama after the round.

Matsuyama and Henley both finished with a score of 23-under par, with Matsuyama taking it in a playoff.

This is Matsuyama’s eighth career PGA Tour victory.

He is tied with K.J. Choi for most Tour wins by an Asian-born player.
