Welch Tied for 20th, Oklahoma Leads Maridoe Collegiate After Round 1
Rhode Island’s Patrick Welch sits in a tie for 20th after the first round of the Maridoe Collegiate Invitational at Maridoe Golf Club in Texas.
Welch fired a two-over 74 in round one to sit in a tie with five other players.
Meanwhile, Welch’s Oklahoma Sooners lead the tournament with a team score of two-over (290) after round one.
They hold a one shot lead over Liberty and a four-shot lead over Texas and Arizona State.
“Maridoe is such a challenge every time you play it,” head coach Ryan Hybl said. “Our guys did such a nice job getting around the course today and battling. Chris (Gotterup) hit one of the best 2-irons that you’ll ever see on No. 2 to a foot for eagle, and that really got him rolling. Logan (McAllister) played a perfect front nine for us. Drew (Goodman) really hung in tough all day. Hopefully we can limit our mistakes and take advantage of some opportunities tomorrow.”
The former Classical High School star got off to a rough start, making double-bogey on the first hole of the tournament.
He followed that up with a birdie on the second hole and bogey, birdie on the fourth and fifth holes.
Welch closed the front nine with a bogey on the ninth hole to shoot 38.
On the back side, Welch saved par on the first six holes before birding the 16th hole and bogeying the 17th Hoel to post a first round 74.
Welch is seeking the 14th top-20 finish of his collegiate career.
