O’Leary, Chatfield in Middle of Pack at Gopher Invitational
Rhode Island’s Andrew O’Leary and Davis Chatfield are in the middle of the pack after day one of the Gopher Invitational.
After 36 holes, O’Leary is tied for tied for 27th with a two round score of 143, while Chatfield is in a tie for 31st with a score of 144.
Overall, Notre Dame is in third place with 18 holes to play.
The Irish have a team score of 563 and are six shots behind first place Kansas.
O’Leary’s Day 1
In his first of two rounds on the day, O’Leary opened up with four bogeys in the first five holes to immediately put himself behind the eight ball.
The 2019 RI Amateur Champion responded with a birdie on six and another on nine to shoot 37 on the front nine.
Making the turn, O’Leary birdied three straight holes, 10, 11 and 12, before bogeying 15 and dropping another birdie on 17 to post a first round 70.
In the afternoon round, O’Leary opened with five straight pars, before back-to-back bogeys on six and seven derailed his round.
He made birdie on nine, but played the second nine in one over par to shoot 73.
Chatfield’s Day 1
Chatfield got off to a brutal start on day one.
He bogeyed four of his first five holes and posted 39 on the front.
After a bogey on ten, Chatfield ripped off three birdies in a row, but then gave it right back by closing with three bogeys in a row to post 76.
In his afternoon round, Chatfield birdied the fifth hole to shoot 34 on the front nine.
Making the turn, things got exciting.
The 2016 RI Amateur Champ went bogey birdie on 11 and 12, and then again on 14 and 15.
Chatfield closed with birdies on 17 and 18 to fire a second round 68.
