Vinny Papa Wins Medalist Honors for Girls, Dessel, Masterson Share Boys Honors
The stroke play portion of the Rhode Island Junior Amateur is in the books at Rhode Island Country Club.
On the girls side. Vinny Papa ran away with medalist honors for the third straight year.
She posted a two-over par 75 to beat out Adrianna Eaton by four shots, and her sister Gianna by five shots.
On the boys side, Misquamicut Club’s Bennett Masterson and Harry Dessel share medalist honors after they both fired a two-under par 69.
Three players finished two shots behind them at even par, including Max Jackson.
Masterson will be the number one seed on the boys side after winning a tiebreaker.
The match play portion of the tournament starts on Tuesday.
Papa’s Round
Papa opened the round with two bogeys in the first five holes, before getting one back with a birdie on the ninth hole.
Making the turn, Papa doubled the 11th hole and bogeyed the 15th hole to move to four over on the day.

However, she closed strong.
Papa birdied the tough par-3 17th hole and then dropped another birdie on 18 to post 75 for the day.
She will be the number one seed in the match play portion of the tournament.
Dessel’s Round
Playing on his home course, Dessel opened with a birdie on the second hole, before making bogey on the fifth and seventh holes.
A birdie on eight would get him back on track heading into the final nine holes.

Dessel, who is having a stellar summer, birdied the 11th hole before making his way across the street to the water holes where he birdied 15.
He would par in the rest of the way to shoot a 69 on the day.
Masterson’s Round
Unlike Dessel, who’s round was pretty straight forward, it was a little more exciting for Masterson.
Masterson opened with three birdies on the first six holes to get to three under right away. It looked like he might run away with medalist honors.
However, a triple-bogey on the seventh hole set him right back to even par.
He got one back on the eighth hole to get to one under before making the turn.
Masterson birdied the 11th hole and then eagled the par-4 12th hole to get to four-under on the round.
However, he would suffer another set back after a double-bogey on the 13th hole to drop him back to one under par.
Masterson would birdie the 15th and 16th holes, before closing with a double-bogey on 18 to shoot 69.
