MA’s Michael Thorbjornsen Wins Western Amateur
Stanford University superstar and Massachusetts native Michael Thorbjornsen won the Western Amateur at Glen View Club in Illinois on Saturday afternoon.
Thorbjornsen beat Vanderbilt freshman Gordon Sargent 4&3 in the championship match to claim the title.

Just two weeks ago, Thorbjornsen won the Massachusetts Amateur over Matt Parziale in a record setting performance.
Thorbjornsen joins a collection of Western Amateur champions that includes Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods.
Next up for Thorbjornsen will be the U.S. Amateur at Oakmont.
The Final Match
After Sargent strung together birdies at holes 9 and 10 to get 1 down, Thorbjornsen responded with run of three birdies in a row to go 4 up with five holes remaining.
“I could kind of feel the momentum switch,” Thorbjornsen said. “But I had to remind myself that I was still leading. That birdie on 11 switched the momentum back in my favor.”
They halved the next two holes with pars to end the match.
