Chatfield, Welch Struggle in Round 1 of Western Amateur
The Western Amateur is well underway at Glen View Club Golf in Illinois and the first round was a struggle for Patrick Welch and Davis Chatfield.
Welch finished the first round with a three-over par 73 and is currently tied for 118th, while Chatfield finished at five-over par and is tied for 139th.
Australia’s Karl Vilips is leading the tournament at five-under par.
There is a cut after Thursday’s round – the top 44 players and ties.
Welch’s Round
Starting on the back nine, Welch opened with two bogeys and a double bogey in his first seven holes to put him behind the pace.
He made his first birdie of the day on his eighth hole (the 17th hole), but gave it right back on his ninth hole (the 18th).
Making the turn, Welch birdied three of his first four holes on his second nine, then saved par on the fifth and sixth holes.
However, he was not able to finish off the round, bogeying two of his final three holes to finish three over for the tournament after round one.
Chatfield’s Round
Entering the Western Amateur, Chatfield was among the hottest players in the country, as GolfNewsRI highlighted.
It appears, at least for one round, that he has cooled off.
Starting on the back nine, Chatfield bogeyed his first two holes, and four of his first six to immediately fall behind the “8-ball.”
He made birdie on his seventh hole (16), but that would be the only birdie he would make in the round.
Making the turn, Chatfield bogeyed the fourth and eighth holes to finish the day at five over par.
